4:15 P.M. : Early in the climb up the Cote de Chatillon, Peron attacked. He was joined by Livingstone, and they made it to the top 31 seconds ahead of Virenque and the pack.

They had a 20-second lead on the pack, still led by Festina riders (Brochard, Moreau, Herve) before the terrible climb up the Col de Joux Plane and the descent that leads to the finish line. They should be rejoined early in the climb.

3:30 P.M. : The Festina team finally put an end to Jalabert's 80-km breakaway in the climb up the Col de la Colombiere (km 138). He was left behind after an attack by Cheppe Gonzalez.

2:45 P.M. : Jalabert, who broke away 58 kilometers into the stage, cleared the Col de la Forclaz 3'05" ahead of Virenque and the pack, still led by the Festina men. The latter cut into Jalabert's lead before the Col de la Croix Fry (1'35"), but Jalabert still cleared it in the lead, 1'30" ahead of the peloton, led by Virenque.

1:40 PM: The pack was slow and grouped when it got to the Col de Tamie. But Jalabert went clear and quickly made it to the top 2'05" ahead of Virenque, Brochard and the pack. His lead reached three minutes before the Col de la Forclaz.

40 kilometers into the stage, Rinero had attacked, but he was rejoined by 14 other riders and the pack after Zabel beat Rinero and Lombardi at the Tours-en-Savoie sprint.
